The counselling process offered at Polo Health + Longevity Centre employs therapeutic models that are soundly based in theory. The development of humans is seen through the lens of "psychosocial interactions." We are now aware how important it is to understand psychological development in terms of its interaction with our social environment. The Professional Counselling Relationship is one where the counsellor has received training (and continues to receive training) in order to intentionally guide the patient through a self-determined change process. The patient is viewed as the "expert" on his or her life and the counsellor works in tandem with the patient to achieve self-determined goals. The counsellor listens, guides, comforts and challenges with both intuitive skills and practiced theories.
Professional Counselling helps give each patient the tools to effectively take charge of their lives and create the life that they want to achieve. Even though it could sometimes seem easier for someone else to make decisions, the professional counsellor is clear that the mandate is to support but never control. Because of experience working with many patients, our counsellors may see barriers that are hidden from the patient's view. Every patient is recognized to be uniquely valuable and deserving of care. The professional counsellor may take the role of mentor, teacher, coach, nurturer, and healer at different times for different reasons. However, it is important to understand that the most important role is that of companion. The journey through change is strenuous and having a 'trusted companion' eases the burden and makes success much more accessible.
